The Bf109E was at a distinct disadvantage during the Battle of Britain due to its comparatively short range. After escorting bombers from their resident bases in northern Europe, the Messerschmitt Bf109E had a limited 15 minutes of fuel left for active combat over the southern tip of England. Despite this though, in the hands of experienced fighter pilots, this agile aircraft proved to be quite the formidable opponent gaining full respect from RAF pilots.
